This week we were all given our second briefing, Titled “Material Innovation.” This is the first of five individual projects in this Unit.

I believe the point of this project is to develop a greater understanding of the different fabrics and their properties, learning how the fabric choice can effect the outcome of a garment. for example stiffer fabrics such as a cotton drill will hold its shape better, however it is also heavier and does not drape well. Compared to a silk satin fabric that naturally drapes well and has a sheen texture. The two act very differently and each create an entirely new effect when used in a simple t-shirt design.

As well as getting to know the different types of fabrics better, this project asks for "2d and 3d investigation of print and constructed textiles." This excites me as I am looking forward to experimenting with different ways of printing and creating textiles.

Below are some of my initial ideas and inspiration, I hope to encorperate the texture of moss and fungi as well as possibly including a more industrial element such as a brick wall covered in moss.
